Bonfire Studios has thrown open the doors on Arkheron, its debut PvP title, with a closed beta that any Xbox Insider can join right now on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. The test went live July 22 and runs until midnight PT on July 27, per the official Xbox Wire announcement — a five-day window, so anyone curious about the game has a short runway to get in.

The studio is explicit that this is a technical test rather than a polished demo. “Closed Beta is a technical test, so expect some bugs and active updates from the dev team,” writes Tim, the Xbox Program Manager who authored the announcement. That framing matters for expectations: Bonfire is a small team of industry veterans shipping its first game, and this beta is as much about stress-testing combat, controls, matchmaking, and performance as it is about marketing.

No classes, just items: how Arkheron plays

Arkheron is a fast-paced PvP game built around teams of three, and its defining design choice is the absence of fixed classes. Instead of locking into a hero or a loadout before the match, players assemble their abilities and playstyle by combining items during each match, per the Xbox Wire post. The items you pick up shape how you fight, how you support teammates, and how you counter what the enemy team is building — closer in spirit to a roguelike draft than a hero shooter’s select screen.

The beta features two modes. Spires is the featured mode for the test: a focused 3v3 arena designed for trying out builds quickly, tuning teamwork, and learning the core combat loop without a long time commitment. Ascension is the game’s peak competitive mode, and it is considerably more ambitious — 15 teams of three drop onto a larger map, loot items for their builds, upgrade their kits, and fight their way up the Tower toward a final 3v3 showdown. That is a 45-player climb structured to funnel survivors into one decisive fight.

There is a scheduling wrinkle worth knowing before you queue: Ascension is only available during limited regional windows on weekends, with Bonfire publishing the full schedule on the game’s official site at arkheron.com. Spires appears to be the always-on mode for the duration of the test, so weekday sessions will center on the arena.

Prestige items you keep after the beta ends

Bonfire is using the closed beta to run its first test of cosmetic progression, and it comes with a genuine carrot. Playing Spires and Ascension — opening chests, defeating monsters, completing Challenge Rifts, and ascending the Tower — earns a currency called Pages. Pages unlock playtest-exclusive “Prestige” items, and the studio confirms these cosmetics remain on your account even after the test ends, per the announcement.

Beta-exclusive rewards that survive into launch are a well-worn but effective incentive, and it signals Bonfire expects account persistence between this test and whatever comes next. For players who like owning things other people can’t get later, the five-day window is the only shot at this first batch.

How to join the Arkheron closed beta

Getting in requires the Xbox Insider Hub rather than a store pre-order or a code drop. On Xbox Series X|S or a Windows PC, the steps per Xbox Wire are: sign in and launch the Xbox Insider Hub app (installing it from the Store first if you don’t have it), navigate to Previews, select Arkheron Insider, hit Join, and wait for registration to complete — at which point you are directed to the store page to install Arkheron Insider. The preview is available only on Series X|S consoles and Windows PC; there is no mention of Xbox One, cloud, or other platforms for this test.

Bonfire says developers will be answering questions and reviewing reported issues directly on the official Arkheron forums, which is where the studio wants feedback on combat, controls, performance, onboarding, and matchmaking. The team is also running community channels, including a Discord server and an active account on X at @PlayArkheron, for players hunting for teammates during the test.

The five-day length is the real constraint here. Technical tests this short are typically about load and telemetry, not content evaluation, so treat rough edges as expected rather than disqualifying. But the structure Bonfire is testing — classless item-driven builds in Spires, and a 15-team Tower climb in Ascension — is a legitimately distinctive shape for a 3v3 PvP game, and a free look at it costs nothing but an Insider Hub signup.

Bottom line: the Arkheron closed beta is live now for Xbox Insiders on Series X|S and Windows PC and closes at midnight PT on July 27; join via Xbox Insider Hub → Previews → Arkheron Insider, play Spires anytime and Ascension in weekend regional windows, and any Prestige cosmetics you unlock with Pages stay on your account after the test ends.
