Hypergryph’s Arknights: Endfield is getting its most substantial overhaul since release. The Version 1.4 update, titled “Companionship Celebration: Homecoming,” begins rolling out on July 16 and does two jobs at once: it upgrades PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for players on PS5 Pro, and it ships the game’s largest content drop to date, headlined by a half-anniversary story expansion.

The headline technical change is the upgraded PSSR implementation. On PS5 Pro, the new model delivers sharper image quality, improved temporal stability, and smoother performance as players move through Endfield’s sprawling sci-fi world. Hypergryph describes the difference as most visible in three places: the fine detail of character outfits and materials, the crispness of the game’s stylized vegetation and industrial environments, and the steadiness of the picture during fast-paced combat.

David Gu, Chief Technology Officer at Hypergryph, framed the work as low-cost for the team but high-impact for players. “Integrating upgraded PSSR required very little engineering effort, while improving image clarity and temporal stability across a wide range of gameplay scenarios,” Gu said. “It allows us to present the world of Arknights: Endfield with greater visual consistency, preserving the smooth exploration and combat experience while bringing the rich details of Talos-II to life.”

A content drop bigger than a patch

Version 1.4 is explicitly the biggest content update since launch, and the centerpiece is narrative. The main story advances with Chapter 3, Acts 1 and 2, as the Wuling storyline reaches its dramatic conclusion. Two new regions open up — Yinglung Pass and the North Wuling Exclusion Zone — each carrying its own environmental mechanics and culminating in a confrontation with a powerful new boss, Alleikhreos.

The update also broadens the playable roster. Arcane arrives as a Nature Caster specializing in Corrosion and crowd control, reinforcing Nature-based team compositions with stronger battlefield command. Liino joins as an Electric Supporter whose healing and amplification abilities are paired with an idol-inspired visual style and a clear support role for team-building.

New ways to play

Beyond story and characters, Version 1.4 layers in three distinct modes. Echoes of War is a permanent seasonal challenge mode that rewards skillful play with exclusive titles. The Rooted Realm is a brand-new roguelike mode built around progressively unlocked stages and unique rewards. And Heat Rage! Mega Arena! is a limited-time co-op challenge that restricts deployments to just two operators, forcing tight, coordinated team choices.

The AIC Factory — Endfield’s production and base-building system — expands with a new Gas production chain, giving players another industrial puzzle to optimize. Quality-of-life additions include Story Skip for new players, Birthday rewards, and an upgraded Photo Mode with adjustable poses for capturing the game’s elaborate character and environment art.

Half-anniversary generosity

To mark the milestone, Hypergryph is handing out half-anniversary rewards, including a free 6★ weapon, Oroberyl, along with recruitment permits, limited-time events, and multiple sign-in campaigns. For a game whose economy is built around operator and weapon acquisition, a free top-tier weapon is a notable goodwill gesture aimed at pulling lapsed players back for the story climax.

Why this matters for PS5 Pro owners

The PSSR upgrade is the part with the longest tail. Endfield was already a showcase for the kind of stylized, detail-heavy rendering that benefits from temporal upscaling, and Hypergryph’s note that integration “required very little engineering effort” signals a maturing relationship between the studio and Sony’s Pro hardware features. For players who bought a PS5 Pro specifically to get more stable 4K frame rates in ambitious games, an upgraded PSSR pass on a content-rich update like this is exactly the kind of win that justifies the hardware.

The full Version 1.4 “Companionship Celebration: Homecoming” update, including the upgraded PS5 Pro PSSR, launches July 16. Hypergryph confirmed the details in its official PlayStation Blog post announcing the update.
