Indonesia has opened its first university-based artificial intelligence technology center, built with NVIDIA and one of the country’s largest telecom operators. The UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center (NVAITC) launched on Thursday in Yogyakarta through a partnership between Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, NVIDIA, and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, according to the NVIDIA announcement. It is the first facility of its kind established under the country’s AI Center of Excellence initiative.
The center gives UGM researchers and students access to enterprise-grade accelerated computing through NVIDIA’s full-stack AI platform paired with GPU Merdeka, Indosat’s sovereign GPU-as-a-service offering, as NVIDIA described in its launch post. The setup connects Indonesian academics to pretrained models, open-source tooling, and mentorship from a global research network.
Indonesia’s government framed the project as a move toward building its own AI capacity rather than simply buying it in. “The Indonesia AI Center of Excellence reflects our long-term vision to position Indonesia as a nation that not only adopts AI but also develops and contributes AI innovations to the world,” said Meutya Hafid, the country’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, in the NVIDIA announcement. UGM rector Prof. dr. Ova Emilia said the university has run AI research since 2023 spanning pandemic response, AI ethics, tuberculosis diagnosis, and smart agriculture.
Three initial projects target problems specific to the archipelago. A medical team at UGM is building eNose-TB, an AI screening tool that detects tuberculosis from breath samples — relevant because Indonesia records more than 1 million new TB cases each year, per NVIDIA’s report. Separately, SmartAgri applies multimodal AI with satellite and sensor data for precision farming, and Tech4Disaster uses geospatial AI to speed up disaster warnings. Agriculture employs nearly 30% of Indonesia’s workforce, the announcement notes, and the country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, facing heavy earthquake and volcanic risk.
Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most-populous country, and its universities have produced applied AI work on COVID-19 response, TB diagnosis, and smart farming, UGM said in its own confirmation of the launch. The center is meant to turn that research into deployed, locally relevant tools rather than leaving it in the lab.
