Apple has released the second public beta of iOS 27, arriving just nine days after the first public build landed on July 13, per 9to5Mac’s release-day report. The quick turnaround gives anyone outside the developer program a fresher look at the rebuilt Siri, a substantial Screen Time overhaul, and a set of performance claims that — unusually for Apple — extend all the way back to the iPhone 11.
The public beta remains free through the Apple Beta Software Program: sign in with your Apple Account, then enroll on-device under Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and select iOS 27 Public Beta. Apple’s standing advice applies double this summer — install on a secondary device if you can, and take a full backup first, because beta builds still carry bugs, battery drain, and third-party app breakage.
Siri finally becomes the centerpiece
The rebuilt Siri is the reason most people will install this beta. Rebuilt on Apple’s next-generation Apple Intelligence system, the assistant now holds ongoing conversations, searches your personal data across Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders, and Calendar, understands what’s on screen, and takes actions inside apps. Responses emerge from the Dynamic Island, and a new standalone Siri app keeps conversation history in one place, synced privately through iCloud.
There are meaningful practical touches beyond the headline demo. The Camera app gains a Siri mode for Visual Intelligence — photograph a membership barcode and it becomes a Wallet pass, or point it at a flyer to import the event. New controls under Settings > Siri > Voice adjust the assistant’s pace and expressivity, and those settings carry over to spoken output in Maps and Safari.
The caveats are real, though. Siri AI launches in select English variants first, won’t be available in the EU at launch, and requires an Apple Intelligence-capable phone — iPhone 15 Pro or newer. A handful of the most advanced on-device features go further still, requiring iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air.
The speed story reaches old hardware
Apple’s performance claims for iOS 27 are specific: app launches up to 30% faster, nearby AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster, and new captures appearing in Photos up to 70% faster. What makes them interesting is scope — Apple says it optimized the CPU scheduler back to the iPhone 11, a six-generation reach that should make unlocking, Home Screen navigation, and Control Center scrolling feel smoother on hardware most vendors stopped tuning years ago. The system is also smarter about dropping a weak Wi-Fi signal in favor of cellular as you leave home, and rebuilt search across Spotlight, Photos, and Mail now surfaces up to five ranked Top Results.

Screen Time gets its biggest rethink in years
For families, the Screen Time overhaul may outweigh Siri. A redesigned dashboard gives parents a clearer view of a child’s activity with one-tap access changes. Time Allowances set limits by category — Games, Entertainment, Social Media — while Schedules control which apps are available at different times of day, with separate routines for school days, evenings, and weekends. Ask to Browse extends the familiar Ask to Buy approval flow to websites, children can request permission before contacting someone new, and Communication Safety now intervenes on gore and violent content in addition to nudity. The one catch: participating Family Sharing devices need to be on the OS 27 generation for the new experience.
Elsewhere in the build, a Liquid Glass customization slider under Settings > Appearance runs from ultra-clear to fully tinted and applies across iOS and third-party apps. Extra-large widgets can fill an entire Home Screen page, alarm volume finally separates from system volume, AirPods gain a custom equalizer, and FaceTime supports simultaneous front- and rear-camera video on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 models.
Bottom line: iOS 27 public beta 2 is the first build casual testers should actually consider installing — Siri AI is the draw if you have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, the speed work benefits phones as old as 2019’s iPhone 11, and the finished release ships this fall, so bugs filed now through Feedback Assistant still count.
