Marvel’s Wolverine releases on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5 — and after the San Diego Comic-Con “Deep Cuts” panel, the shape of Insomniac Games’ bloodiest project yet is finally clear. Between the new Story Trailer, a June State of Play gameplay deep-dive, and a steady drip of official reveals, there is now enough confirmed detail to answer the questions that matter: who Logan is fighting, who is playing him, how combat actually works, and which edition is worth your money. This guide pulls every officially confirmed fact into one place, with nothing sourced from leaks or speculation.
Release date, platform, and price
The date is locked: September 15, 2026, on PS5 only. Pre-orders are open now for two versions — the Standard Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition at $79.99 / £79.99 / €89.99, per the official breakdown on the PlayStation Blog. You can wishlist or buy through the PlayStation Store, and the Standard Edition is also on PlayStation Direct.
The Digital Deluxe tier includes five exclusive suits (Incredible, Savage, Age of Apocalypse, Night Hunt, and New Leather), five exclusive claw styles, and three additional Technique Points to accelerate early progression. Insomniac has been explicit that the suits and claws are purely cosmetic, so nobody is buying power — just style and a modest head start on unlocks.
The story: Team X, Trask, and The Hand
This is an original story, not an adaptation. James “Logan” Howlett rejoins Team X — a last-stand mutant task force he walked out on three years earlier — in a world where mutants live hidden and hunted. The inciting threat comes from the Reavers, a cybernetic guns-for-hire militia capturing mutants for their client Bolivar Trask, a billionaire industrialist described by Insomniac as “driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority” in the State of Play deep-dive.
The SDCC Story Trailer widened the villain roster considerably. The Hand — the red-garbed ninja clan Marvel fans know from Daredevil lore — is confirmed as a major enemy faction, and Lady Deathstrike is positioned as one of the game’s “big bads.” Insomniac also teased what looked unmistakably like Sabretooth in the closing moments of the June gameplay trailer, though his exact role is still officially unconfirmed.
Jean Grey is the other pole of the story. Introduced as a powerful telekinetic and the emergent leader of the captured mutants, she fights alongside Logan in extended gameplay sequences, and the Story Trailer opens on a charged confrontation between the two. Insomniac is clearly building the narrative around that relationship rather than around a parade of cameos.

Who’s making it and who’s in it
Insomniac Games is developing in collaboration with Marvel Games, with the same core leadership that shipped the Spider-Man series: Creative Director Marcus Smith, Game Director Mike Daly, and Narrative Director Walt Williams — the writer best known for Spec Ops: The Line, which tells you something about the tone Insomniac is chasing.
The confirmed cast pairs Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) as Logan/Wolverine with Krizia Bajos as Jean Grey. Both actors appeared on stage at the SDCC panel alongside Marvel Games executive producer Eric Monacelli. On the music side, award-winning composer David Fleming (The Last of Us HBO series) is scoring the game, with the full soundtrack releasing separately on August 28, 2026 — two weeks before launch. A sample track is already streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, and YouTube.
How combat actually works
Insomniac’s June gameplay breakdown made the design thesis obvious: this is a brutal, deliberately violent single-player action game, not Spider-Man with claws. Logan can stalk and ambush from above, but the core loop is close-range shredding built on named Techniques like Tornado Spin and Bull Rush, plus Critical Strikes — cinematic finishing moves he can trigger solo or in tandem with allies like Jean.
The system that ties it together is Rage. Every successful attack, parry, and kill builds the meter, which you can spend on stronger attacks or on activating Logan’s Healing Factor to survive wounds that would end other heroes. Push the meter to its ceiling and you trigger Rage Tier 3, a monochromatic berserk state visually inspired by Marvel Comics’ Black, White & Blood series. There is also a comeback mechanic called Last Stand: when Logan is bloodied and near defeat, he can channel rage into his Healing Factor and claw his way back into the fight.
Set pieces lean into the fantasy too. The extended demo showed a highway sequence with Logan leaping between moving vehicles, slashing tires, hurling Reavers off the road, and carving through armored Brutes — closer to a slasher-movie chase than a stealth sandbox.
The crossovers and the prequel comic
Two Arc System Works crossovers are confirmed. Wolverine’s stylized suit from MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will be unlockable in Marvel’s Wolverine through normal progression from day one, and the trade goes both ways: the Battle Reborn suit from Insomniac’s game arrives free for all MARVEL Tōkon players starting September 1, two weeks before Wolverine launches.
Lore-hungry players can start early. A digital prequel comic — written by Narrative Director Walt Williams with interior art by Luke Ross and a cover by Iban Coello — is available now via Marvel Unlimited, after debuting as an SDCC giveaway. It covers Logan’s fraught history with Team X on a mission to protect mutantkind, which is exactly the backstory the main game picks up three years later.
The run-up to launch, at a glance
Here is the confirmed calendar between now and release:
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| Now | Pre-orders open; prequel comic on Marvel Unlimited |
| August 28, 2026 | Full David Fleming soundtrack releases |
| September 1, 2026 | Battle Reborn suit free in MARVEL Tōkon |
| September 15, 2026 | Marvel’s Wolverine launches on PS5 |
The smart-money read: Insomniac is running the same playbook that made Spider-Man 2 land — front-load the story reveals, keep the last act of marketing for systems depth, and let a prestige cast and composer signal that this is the studio’s “mature” swing. If the September 15 date holds, Wolverine becomes the anchor of PlayStation’s fall slate, and everything shown so far suggests Insomniac knows exactly how much weight that date carries.
