The show also confirmed Kingdom Hearts IV as a Switch 2 launch title, a cinematic Star Fox reimagining with mouse controls arriving June 25, and Splatoon Raiders pivoting the series to single-player treasure hunting on July 23.

What’s Actually Different From Past Nintendo Directs

Three moves signal a shift in how Nintendo treats its hardware transition:

N64 remakes as Switch 2 flagships — Ocarina of Time isn’t a Virtual Console port; it’s a ground-up rebuild. That sets a precedent: expect major N64/GameCube titles rebuilt for Switch 2, not just emulated. [Nintendo Direct, 0:12:30]

Mouse controls as a first-party standard — Star Fox (mouse targeting), Nintendo Switch Sports Resort (skateboarding), ONE PIECE: Grand Gourmet (restaurant management), Splatoon Raiders (menus/gadgets). The Switch 2’s mouse mode isn’t an accessory gimmick — Nintendo’s own studios are designing around it. [Treehouse Live, 1:45:20]

FromSoftware on Nintendo hardware — The Duskbloods is a PvPvE exclusive from the Elden Ring studio. That’s a partnership signal: Nintendo is courting the “hardcore” western audience it historically missed. [Direct, 0:38:15]

What This Means for You (By Player Type)

If You Are… What to Do
Current Switch owner, not upgrading yet Your library stays playable — Metaphor, Fire Emblem, Dragon’s Dogma 2, DMC5, Lies of P all hit Switch 2 and original Switch through 2026. No urgency.
Waiting for Switch 2 Three day-one anchors: Ocarina of Time (2026), Kingdom Hearts IV (launch), Star Fox (June 25). Free demos today reduce risk — try Star Fox tutorial before committing.
NSO subscriber N64 controller works with Star Fox on Switch 2 — a rare hardware perk. GameShare (internet local co-op) and GameChat (voice) are new; subscription tier TBD.
FromSoftware / PvP fan The Duskbloods closed network test summer 2026 — sign up via Nintendo site when registration opens. Only confirmed FromSoftware exclusive on Switch 2 so far.
Rhythm / indie fan Rhythm Heaven Groove (July 2) has 110+ games and a new Beatspell mode (rhythm spells vs monsters). Pre-orders open; Tsunku♂ soundtrack.

Open Questions (What Nintendo Didn’t Say)

  • Switch 2 price & launch date — still absent. The Direct showed games, not hardware pricing.
  • Backward compatibility details — “Switch games work on Switch 2” was the extent. Performance modes, original Switch cartridge support, save transfer specifics: unaddressed.
  • Online subscription changes — GameShare (local co-op over internet) and GameChat (voice) are new. Whether they require NSO or a new tier: TBA.
  • Third-party Switch 2 exclusives — The Duskbloods, Xenoblade Genesis, Ninjala 2 are the only confirmed third-party exclusives so far. Major publishers (Ubisoft, EA, Capcom beyond DMC5/Onimusha) held back.

The Bottom Line

If you own a Switch: the cross-platform slate (Metaphor, Fire Emblem, Dragon’s Dogma 2, DMC5, Lies of P, Rayman) keeps the current hardware alive through 2026. If you’re waiting for Switch 2: Ocarina of Time, Kingdom Hearts IV, and Star Fox (June 25) make a compelling day-one argument — especially with free demos available today. The mouse control standard across first-party titles is the sleeper feature; it changes how strategy, simulation, and shooter games feel on a console.
